What are the benefits of an implant registry?

Complications, such as infections, increased bleeding or thromboembolism, can occur during any intervention. Despite all prophylactic measures, complications cannot be completely avoided. It is therefore important for hospitals and surgeons to know whether they have an above-average number or below-average number of complications in comparison with other hospitals or surgeons.

Identify problems

As the scientific literature contains only comparative values with little informative value, the quality average for restorations in Switzerland must first be determined by observing as many implants as possible over a long period of time. This is the purpose of SIRIS.

Hospitals and surgeons can judge the quality of their work only by a comparison with the average value and with their own previous values. If, for example, a hospital finds that its infection rate is high compared with other hospitals, or its own previous year's result, it will quickly take the necessary corrective action.

Prevent implant failure

As with all highly technical procedures, undesirable events can occur in endoprosthetics. Implant failures receive a great deal of media attention.

The common factor in all known implant failures is the length of time for the clinics and doctors concerned to realize that these are not isolated cases but systemic problems. A centrally managed and independent registry reveals the problems much earlier.
